WOODBURY— One year later Nonnewaug High School is back with one of their favorite traditions. The annual Powderpuff Football Game is back and better than ever.
The Powderpuff Game is a flag football game between the junior and senior girls. This year is the fourth year that the Powderpuff Game will take place.
Nonnewaug history teacher Kyle Brennan was a part of the creating process for the first ever Powderpuff Game.
“When I was the senior class advisor in the fall of 2022, a lot of my class wanted to bring Powderpuff here. I think it started the year before that, the class of ‘22 really wanted to do Powderpuff and it was just too late in the school year to be able to pull it off,” Brennan continues. “So when I was advising the senior class, we had a really good group that really wanted to do it and so we put it together.”
The senior girls are eager to make a turn around this year after an upsetting loss against the class of ‘25 last year.
Senior girls soccer captain Ella Quinn is excited for this year and thinks that with the right mindset they can secure a win over the juniors.
“I’m very excited and I’m looking forward to having the girls this year redeem themselves because last year we didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” Quinn said. “I think last year we were a little cocky and we really need to have that winning mindset this year so we can beat the juniors.”
Alike with Quinn, Sophia Garguilo a senior field hockey captain also believes that the girls need to put in the work in order to win the Powderpuff Game.
“I’m really excited and I’m hoping that we win this time,” Garguilo continues. “We need to come in less cocky and stop practicing celebrations all practice and just play better overall.”

The Powderpuff Game will take place on Monday, November 24th at 3:45 pm, it will follow the Corn Bowl game which is played by the Nonnewaug staff vs the seniors.
Aubrie Salisbury, a junior at Nonnewaug who will be playing in her first Powderpuff Game, thinks that her team is going to have to work really hard in order to beat the seniors.
“I think we are going to do well as we are an athletic grade but I don’t think we stand a chance against the seniors because they had experience last year,” Salisbury said. “I still think we will do alright, it being our first year, if we all try our best.”
Robert Metcalfe, a senior on the football team who coached the girls last year, thinks that with a new style of coaching they can hopefully pull off a win.
“I think the outcome will hopefully be different, it’s really all up to our players, and we have a different style of coaching that we’re going to try and incorporate this year and hopefully we come out with a win,” Metcalfe said.
Many including Brennan like the idea of having a junior girls vs senior girls football game, bringing people together to have fun.
“I like how we’ve established a tradition that everybody looks forward to every year, and honestly has become some of the best athletic competition that we’ve had here all year,” Brennan said. “It’s a must see event.”
