WOODBURY – As the school year began, many students made laste changes to their class schedules.
Some wanted to switch out of classes that may have been too hard for them, while others were trying to benefit themselves by preparing for future goals.
But, course changes didn’t end after a couple of days. They were still taking place as late as the middle of October.
“I didn’t feel challenged enough in the class I was in,” said Nonnewaug freshman Kailey Burgos.
Though not all reasons were for academic purposes, others were feeling unhappy with the social aspect of their classroom.
“I feel like if I was going to enjoy school,” said freshman Stella Stein, “I would feel more comfortable if I had classes with some of my friends.”
As many students attempted to change their schedule, the outcome wasn’t always in their favor.
“It’s inevitable that not everyone’s going to be happy with every schedule that they have,” said Danielle Hutchins, one of Nonnewaug High School’s counselors.
Not only were the students facing challenges with their schedules, but so were the counselors.
“I want every student to feel happy with their schedule when they come to school,” said Hutchins.
While not every student got their perfect schedule, the school staff worked hard to support them and help make the best of it.
An effective and meaningful schedule can enhance a student’s attitude toward school.
“I think what makes me enjoy school more is when I actually have something to look forward to when I go to class,” said Stein. “I feel I actually have enjoyment towards school when I’m with my friends and I would be unable to do that without switching my schedule.”
