WOODBURY – After Halloween passes, most people jump straight to Christmas, but what about Thanksgiving?
Every year, Christmas seems to start earlier, and earlier, leaving no time to even think about Thanksgiving. They are both a time spent with family and to show gratitude. But why do we value Christmas more than Thanksgiving?
Freshman Reese Longoria has a different opinion. “I think it is a great time to get into the Christmas spirit as early as you want.”
Christmas is clearly a more liked holiday because you get gifts and the feeling of Christmas is more cheerful, but that doesn’t mean you need to take away from Thanksgiving.
There are some good qualities that Thanksgiving has that Christmas doesn’t, like less stress trying to figure out the perfect presents for friends and family.
Thanksgiving is one of the only holidays to show appreciation for what you have. It is also one of the only times to get your family together and spend quality time with them.
As much as she loves Christmas, Longoria doesn’t want to take anything away from thanksgiving. She agrees that it’s a great time to spend with family. “Thanksgiving is a time to show you’re thankful and come together as a family.”
Joshua Kornblut, a science teacher at Nonnewaug Highschool, says, “Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I absolutely love Thanksgiving for the food, seeing family and it’s overall just a great holiday.”
Thanksgiving gives the perfect amount of time to transition from Halloween to Christmas without causing stress.
Kornblut also feels that Thanksgiving gives the right amount of time before preparing for Christmas. “I think people just want to get to the right to Christmas, and I think Thanksgiving is a great segue from Halloween to Christmas.”
Kornblut believes that Thanksgiving deserves more. “I personally think Thanksgiving gets overlooked quite often, and after Halloween, people are already preparing for Christmas.”
Although Christmas is a very exciting holiday, I feel we should still give Thanksgiving the recognition it deserves.
