WOODBURY- From becoming a registered nurse with a bachelors in nursing from Western Connecticut State University, to earning an RN license from Quinnipiac University, to being the advisor for Nonnewaug High School’s Leo Club, Sandy Snabaitis can do it all.
Nonnewaug’s beloved nurse, Sandy Snabaitis, works hard keeping the students healthy while also advising the school’s Leo Club, which is the youth version of Lions Club International. It focuses on developing young minds for leadership roles.
“I guide and work on different activities we can do to support our communities,” says Snabaitis.
Recently, Snabaitis led Leo Club (along with National Honor Society run by Ms. Hodges) to host a food drive. Hundreds of items were collected and donated to the local residents to benefit them during the busy holiday season.
Snabaitis’s great leadership skills and characteristics make her the most ideal candidate for the job.
“Mrs. Snabaitis is very kind and she always makes me feel so welcome in Leo Club,” said freshman Sophie Mehegan, who partakes in the Leo Club.

Her wide range of ideas to help the club grow and become an important part of our community helps others achieve their goals too.
“I want to accomplish initiatives,” says Mehegan. “I can do that with the opportunities we get from Leo Club and when the club is in session all I want to do is work harder to be a better leader, and she helps me get to that goal.”
Snabaitis’ leadership has brought the group further. She has achieved many things–from leading fundraisers for local food drives or scholarships to even simple things around the school such as decorating the halls with Christmas ornaments.
Her characteristics as a nurse, like her unflinching ability to act with compassion and confidence, help her fill the role as Leo Advisor to the brim. She can bring those values from work and teach students to express them like she does and put them into planning events for the community.
“We do a lot of social activities,” says Snabaitis. “Right off the bat we have the haunted hayride, in which we help the Lions raise money for our Woodbury scholarship fund.”
Mehegen says, “Mrs. Snabaitis is really a great leader who is always ready to get her hands on something and take control. Shes amazing, and her being the advisor for so many years has really made an impact at Nonnewaug.”
