Woodbury — Ever since a young age, Nonnewaug freshman Charlotte Toon has shown promise in hockey. Toon consistently excels on the ice, winning a regional championship, two state championships and heading to Nationals this March.
With all of Toon’s accomplishments she has helped her team achieve, she still has a pivotal decision to make: what school she will be attending next year.
Toon plans to attend a private school next year and re-class as a freshman.
“I’ll finish my season at Mid-Fairfield and then next year; I hope to stay with them [Mid Fairfield] for a split season, and go to private school for high school hockey,” Toon said.
As Toon looks towards the rest of her future in high school, she can’t help but wonder what college will look like, too.
“I hope to play in college, hopefully Division I. I want to play for as long as I can and at the best level I can,” Toon said.
Toon has submitted her application to the following schools: Taft, Hotchkiss, Kent, Frederick Gunn, Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy and Berkshire. These schools are some of the most prestigious prep schools in all of New England, with highly competitive hockey programs that often feed players into DI colleges.
Even with all the excitement, Toon still is putting up big numbers in recent tournaments. She has played in 13 games, scoring 13 goals with 4 assists. She has led her team to many victories by scoring 2 of her 13 goals in overtime.

The foundations of Toon’s promising career all started when she first laced up her skates. She was influenced by her older brothers who played hockey as well.
“I started playing hockey because I grew up around the sport, my older brothers played hockey. So most of my early life was spent playing, watching and learning it,” Toon said. “When you’re around it so much it almost becomes a part of you. It is what made me fall in love with the game.”
Toon’s love for the game grew over time.
She started playing competitively at six years old and climbed up the rankings quickly, moving from boys teams to tier one U14 teams. Currently, she is on the roster for CT Mid-Fairfield Stars tier one, which is one of the top programs in CT and in one of the top leagues in New England. They often place in the top 25 nationally and top 5 in CT.
“We have stayed with the same program [Mid-Fairfield Stars] for the past 5 years,” Greg Toon, Charlotte’s Toon’s dad and biggest supporter said. “I think this program is really strong, consistently sending teams to nationals and having players get noticed by private schools.”
Toon continues to climb the ranks, to private school next year, hopefully leading her to college next.
Her impressive career is not over yet. Next year she will be at private school and continue working hard and putting in the effort.
“She has put in so much effort in both practicing on and off the ice. She always tries to improve her play,” Greg Toon said. “Not only practicing physically but [she’s] also doing things to break down the game like watching films and always trying to learn.”
Toon works hard to continue her career. Her future is looking bright as she takes her next step forward, to private school.
While NHS will miss Toon’s contributions on the soccer field next fall, her future on the ice comes into focus.
“For now,” Toon said, “I am focused on taking the next step forward for me.”
