WOODBURY – Azem Frangu was a nervous freshman joining the Nonnewaug boys soccer team three years ago. Now, the senior wants to be the leader that he had back then.

“They helped make me and the other players feel welcome and comfortable on the team,” Frangu said. “When you first start the season, it can be really nerve-wracking, and they helped us adjust a little better.”

In previous years, Nonnewaug has always started strong. This year is no different, but what should we expect for the rest of the season? The seniors will have to lead the way, according to coach Toby Denman.

“We have a pretty eager group of seniors,” said Denman.

He believes that the use of their returning seniors will be crucial for the team this year. Nonnewaug has many incoming players this year, and the help of the seniors to make them comfortable in this new environment is important for the team’s success.

Returning seniors, such as Frangu, Nicholas Higgins, and Devon Zapatka are excited to see how far the team can go this year with the newcomers. Although they are still adjusting, there are some underclassmen who are thriving in their start to high school soccer.

“Josh Zapatka has really stood out to not only me but everyone on the team,” said Higgins, a captain. “He has shown a lot of skill and experience for his age.”

Denman sees several strengths in this year’s team.

“Competitive nature and team chemistry is a strength,” Denman said.

Nonnewaug is 7-1-1, good for second place in the Berkshire League, as the Chiefs enter the second half of the season.
