The Spartans celebrate after scoring the final goal of the night as Shepaug beat Fox Lane on Feb. 5.

WASHINGTON, Conn. — The Shepaug/Nonnewaug/Litchfield hockey co-op has proven to be a force on the ice. The Spartans finished the regular season with a 7-11-1 record, enough to qualify for the Division III state tournament.

Led by a strong class of seniors, the team won four of its last five games to make states. One of the highlights was a 7-3 win over Fox Lane of New York on Feb. 5.

The game against Fox Lane started off slow for the Spartans, who fell behind 3-0 in the first period. During the final two periods, sophomore Gunnar Ough made some clutch plays to score four goals. Senior Cameron Goethner tallied two goals and senior Brody Turner added another goal. Ough won the team’s Player of the Game award, and sophomore Henry Kiel won the Hardest Working Player of the Game award.

Next week, the team will start their state tournament run.
