WOODBURY — For some mechanics students at Nonnewaug, this is the time they have been waiting for all their high school career: a way to freely show their capabilities through their love of welding.
Mechanic students are tapping into their creativity by finding random metal things you’d find around a shop.
“I’m using washers, nuts, metal rods and plasma cutting flower petals from sheet metal,” said Ashley Blood, a Nonnewaug senior.
Ashley Blood has been in Andrew Zielinski’s mechanics class for all four years at Nonnewaug. She has never been able to free weld until her final year.
“I gotta say, having this project now is a great way to end my senior year,” Blood said. “I’m finding myself really being able to show off what I’ve learned from my past years and I can kinda brag about it.”
Nick Mancini is another senior in the mechanics class and has also been in it for his whole high school career. Some students just wanna be their own teacher.
“I finally want to come to class because I’m my own teacher and I don’t have to meet a high standard that is unrealistic for mechanics class,” Mancini said.
Some students can’t have people surrounding them while they work. Not having that for this project was a big bonus for Ty Starziski, a junior at Nonnewaug.
“I finally get to weld without someone looking over my shoulder,” Starziski said.
