WOODBURY – It’s common for a school to win a championship tournament for a sport, but to shut out odds and win all four championship tournaments is rare. NHS secured this rare accomplishment for the first time.
“I think our student athletes are pretty invested,” said head coach of the boys soccer, Toby Denman. “I don’t think this has ever happened before.”
Tuesday night, the NHS boys soccer team was down 2-0 going into the second half of the championship against Housatonic. With 16 minutes left in the game they were able to secure 3 goals.

“Winning felt nice because it was the first time for our team to win in a long time,” said sophomore Vincenzo Rose. “It feels good because last year I think most of our sports lost and now we are all winning.”
Rose scored 2 out of the three goals.
Like the boys team, NHS girls soccer was able to dominate on the field.
Following the win of the boys team, the girls soccer team was able to beat Housatonic under the lights on October 28. The girls team was able to secure the win with the final score of 4-2 with goals from Rosie Makarewicz, Audrey Doran, and Hailey Goldman.

“It was really exciting to win because last year we were so close,” said sophomore Rosie Makarewicz. “This year we actually did it and it was such an accomplishment.”
Makarewicz was able to score 2 out of the 4 goals that night. Makarewicz played through the game that night dismissing her painful ankle. After hurting it in the first half, Makarewicz pushed through the injury.
Like girls soccer, the NHS field hockey team made it to the BL semi finals last year. But, this year, the team was able to secure the win against defending state champions Shepaug.
Going against odds, field hockey went into double overtime followed by shootouts against Shepaug. During the game Catherine Viveros was able to get a goal in the second quarter and Shepaug put in the goal in the third quarter. Carrying out the 1-1 tie NHS went head to head in shootouts.
Goalie Fiona Scozzafava blocked 3 out of the 3 shootouts, allowing the NHS field hockey team to win.
“Shootouts are something I’ve practiced a lot throughout the season, so I felt comfortable going into the shootout against Shepaug,” said Scozzafava. “When it came down to it I knew I could rely on my team to score as well.”

Just like the NHS field hockey team, the NHS volleyball team has worked hard throughout the season to secure their BL tournament win.
The NHS volleyball team beat Northwestern 3-1 on Thursday October 30th. The volleyball team has grown together throughout the season improving during practice and after.
“We have practice everyday, but I feel like the team even goes outside of practice to communicate and grow our bonds with each other,” says Chmiel. “It really showed on the court in the way we worked together.”
After all the long practices and film sessions the NHS sports program can proudly shine light upon their 4 BL tournament championship titles this year.
“I’m almost certain no school has won them all,” said Denman, “so to be the first to do something is great.”
