WOODBURY–On February 6th, 2026, Nonnewaug took to the track at the second annual Berkshire League Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Bethel High School. The boys team won first place with 132 points, topping the second place team, Thomaston, by 31 points. The girls team had many deserving wins and ultimately placed 3rd overall, just one point behind the second place team, Thomaston.
Mrs. Flaherty, the boys indoor track coach, is happy with the success of the boys team this season saying, “I’m really proud of them [the boys team]. They did a two-peat, so last year was the first indoor Berkshire League Championship for indoor track, and they won that one, and they won this one also. And the competition was definitely steeper this year, so they worked hard. All their hard work for the season paid off, and they are two-time champs.”
Mr. Flaherty, the girls indoor track coach, is proud of the girls team and ready for the next steps in the outdoor season. “At BL’s the Nonnewaug girls did an incredible job on the track, and we knew it would be an uphill battle trying to make up points for our lack of depth in the field events,” he says. “We are going to focus on developing strength in the field events during outdoor this spring so that we have the depth we need in jumps, throws, and pole vault going forward.”
Throughout the season, the coaches had to adapt because of the cold, snowy, and icy weather outside, but it all paid off in the end. “I have jumpers that learned how to long jump in the hallway; two of them were able to score,” says Mrs. Flaherty.
Overall, the entire indoor track team as a whole worked through upsets and competed until the very end.
