WOODBURY– While most students start their day in front of a whiteboard, Kenzie Scully begins hers face-to-face with the school’s cows. The crisp early morning air quietly fills her lungs as a gentle moo drifts across the pen, wrapping her in a feeling of safety and calm that settles in almost at once.
“Feeling their fur and hearing them breathe makes me feel grounded,” Scully reflects. “It’s my favorite kind of quiet.”
Most kids tend to stay away from these giant beef patties, but not Kenzie. She knew from a young age that cows weren’t just something on a menu to her—they were something she wanted to have in her life.

“Most kids walk past the pens. I walk toward them,” Scully added. “Even when I was little, I’d get excited every time I saw a cow out the car window.”
Over time, Scully learned to recognize the small details others would miss, the way a cow shifts its weight, the soft sounds they make to communicate, or the way they gather when they recognize something familiar.
“They’re calmer than people think,” Scully said. “If you’re calm with them, they’re calm with you.”
That trust is something she values. Building it takes patience, something Scully says the cows have taught her naturally.
“You can’t rush them,” Scully explained. “You have to give them time, and eventually they warm up to you.”
For many students, cows are something they only see from a distance while driving through towns. But for Scully, they’re a regular part of her life and a source of comfort before the school day begins.
Even when things feel stressful, the barn gives her a place to rest.
“When I’m out there, everything feels slower,” Scully said. “You’re not thinking about homework or tests, you’re just in the moment.”
As the morning ends and the rest of the school day starts surrounded by classroom walls, Scully eventually leaves the pens to come inside. For her, those moments in the barn aren’t just a part of a routine, they’re a reminder of the connection she’s has with the cows she loves most. The calm she finds in the barn often stays with her long after she walks away.
