WILLIMANTIC— The Nonnewaug Chiefs Baseball team beat the Housatonic Mountaineers at Holowaty Family Field at Eastern Connecticut State University last night with a final score of 7-3.
“It was a really cool experience,” says junior player Ryan Alther.
The Chiefs were unable to play at Dunkin’ Park this year, a tradition the program has tried to create for multiple years, so the team decided to play at ECSU, which gave a memorable experience to this years senior-loaded team.
“I’m happy they did something like this for the seniors this year,” says senior player Jack Lynch. “We have been playing together for four years, some of us longer, and it was just cool to experience it with each other.”
Nonnewaug senior Tyler DiElsi earned his first win of the season, allowing 2 earned runs on four hits and three walks over 5 innings, racking up six strikeouts. Senior Timothy Angiolini came out of the bullpen securing the win for Nonnewaug, striking out five over two perfect innings.
The Nonnewaug offense made sure to have their pitchers back, highlighted by Brayden Whipple’s two-run single, as well as Derek Chung, who recorded an RBI hit, as well as a run scored.
The Chiefs will next travel to Thomaston to take on the Golden Bears Friday afternoon and look to improve upon their 2-0 record.
