It’s Back: Anything But a Backpack (PHOTOS)

Nonnwaug not only raised thousands of dollars for LLS research and treatment, but its theme week days added excitement to campus.

WOODBURY — With all the spirit going around Nonnewaug High School, Anything But a Backpack Day on Feb. 8 was another hit with all the participating students competing to see whose “backpack” was most amusing.

“It started three years ago and everyone thought it was awesome,” said junior Samantha Kostka. “It dwindled in popularity, but it’s definitely the best day out of spirit week by far.”

“Anything But a Backpack day is very involved,” said junior Karisa Cizauskas. “Everyone plays a part to participate, and it’s fun to see what everyone brings.”

There were rules for the day’s activities, including bans on oversized objects that couldn’t easily fit into a classroom, large objects with wheels, and human beings — although some people missed these previous features.

“It’s so fun when students bring people and kayaks,” said Brooke Ackerman, a junior. “It’s such a big event during spirit week.”

This theme day was one of the finale events as part of NHS’ winter red-out spirit week. Funds raised throughout the week benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
