WOODBURY — The boys and girls outdoor track and field teams swept the competition May 13 for the last time on the Nonnewaug track for the season. Not only was it the last league meet before the post season begins, but it was also Senior Night for the 12 seniors. Collin Wilmot, Ethan Perez, James Mahon, Nick Higgins, Adam Budrewicz, Scott Meyer, Alex Gibbons, Dylan Duda, Tyler Timko, Juliette Nichols, Gianna Lodice, and Jules Bellagamba were celebrated. The team also included Austrian foreign-exchange student Dominik Uvardi in the celebration who will return to his home this summer.

The boys and girls team both won the meet over Thomaston and Terryville. With these 2 significant wins, the teams parlayed Senior Night success into championships May 18 with an undefeated regular season under their belts.

“In the beginning of the season, I thought Thomaston was the biggest competition,” says Deborah Flaherty, Nonnewaug boys track coach. “Now we know that it’s Shepaug. I’m glad that we got cross country redemption from them beating us. We had lots of energy from celebrating the seniors on senior night. Jake Cenatiempo in the 4×4 overtook the best 400 runner in the league, which was a big moment. This moment embodied the spirit of the night, there were lots of PRs all over the board. Parents did a great job on the senior’s celebrations as well. For the coaches it’s bittersweet, since we’re losing such great players, but we’re excited for them.”
