WOODBURY –– All 11 seniors on the Nonnewaug boys soccer team played in their last regular season game against Gilbert on Oct. 22, a 6-0 victory for the Chiefs. Nonnewaug scored six goals, and Matthew Shupenis and Noah Sapack did not let any shots into the net.
Not only was it their last regular-season game, but it was also the Chiefs’ senior night. Before the game, each senior presented flowers to his family and was congratulated by friends and family.
Assistant soccer coach Joshua Kornblut said the senior night was a fun experience.
“It gave us an opportunity to start all 11 seniors, and there are 11 players on the field,” Kornblut said. “They were all able to contribute and play a good bit of the game, so I think it was very successful.”
Seniors who don’t typically score, such as Sapack and defender Jeff Bernardi, got a chance to play up top and found the back of the net.
“The seniors were super excited,” Kornblut said. “The whole team was behind them cheering them on. Everyone had a great attitude throughout the entire game, and what was really cool was hearing and seeing all the guys rally behind some of the seniors who were looking to get their first goal or just play up in the attacking zone for the first time after being defenders their whole career.”
