Shaking. Sweating. Scared. These are common effec

Shaking. Sweating. Scared.

These are common effects of anxiety about public speaking, which many people experience. Whether it’s giving a speech in front of a large audience or doing a school presentation in front of a classroom, talking in front of groups of people can be nerve-wracking.

“I think that the students here at Nonnewaug have enough stress on themselves as it is,” Nonnewaug sophomore Karli Brandt said, “and knowing they have to present in front of their whole class makes them more stressed.”

Kyle Brennan, Nonnewaug teacher and recent speaker at the Nonnewaug top 10% banquet, somewhat uniquely doesn’t have any grudges against public speaking.

“I’ve always been around it, so I think about it differently than a lot of other people,” said Brennan, who was a broadcast journalism major at Quinnipiac University. “I feel like the root of anxiety is lack of preparation, and so if you’re prepared then you can basically be confident no matter what you do.”

Having no license, parents working, and no ride to

Having no license, parents working, and no ride to lacrosse practice is a problem that underclassmen at Nonnewaug High School deal with every day.

Nonnewaug’s players on the co-op lacrosse team, known as Northwest United, have to travel to Litchfield to practice. But freshmen, sophomores, and some juniors on the lacrosse team sometimes find it hard to find a ride.

“I think it is difficult because as a sophomore who can’t drive and has parents who work, having to ask someone every day can be annoying to other people and difficult for me,” sophomore Deme Jones said. “Also having to find rides for my friends and sister [Laila], there isn’t always enough room in the upperclassmen’s cars, so we have to figure out a way.”

Fall, 1996. Nick Sheikh, a freshman at Nonnewaug H

Fall, 1996. Nick Sheikh, a freshman at Nonnewaug High School, makes his way down to the grass soccer field behind the school, one of his first practices as a member of the Chiefs boys soccer team ahead of him.

Fall, 2008. Sheikh, now a certified biology teacher, unlocks the door of classroom 131 in Nonnewaug’s old science wing – his first classroom. Later that day, Sheikh makes his way down to the field, now as head coach of the Nonnewaug girls soccer team.

Twenty-one years later, his fall routine remains the same – just with a different classroom number, a renovated school, and a much nicer playing field.

“I had a good experience here. I had a lot of dedicated educators, and I think if you look at some of the current staff, there’s quite a few former grads that are back teaching and coaching, which is good to see,” Sheikh reflected. “There’s some level of giving back to the community that helped raise you.”

As a Nonnewaug student, Sheikh was a four-year soccer and tennis player, a National Honor Society and Student Council member, and a high performing student who took most of the AP classes offered at the time. After graduating, Sheikh played competitive collegiate tennis at Connecticut College, and went on to get his masters’ degree in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia University.

In the bustling halls of Nonnewaug High School, am

In the bustling halls of Nonnewaug High School, amidst the chatter and laughter of students, there lies a silent but significant issue – excessive food waste during meal times. From untouched meals to discarded leftovers, the cafeteria is unwillingly contributing to environmental degradation. It’s time for a change, and it starts with addressing our habits around food consumption.

“Unfortunately with today’s society food waste is an unseen issue,” said Clayton Hilpertshauser, a custodian at Nonnewaug. “The menu really controls how much food we throw out every day.”

Food waste is a global crisis, and every action, no matter how small, can make a difference. Nonnewaug has the opportunity to lead by example and significantly reduce its food waste footprint. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by rethinking the portion sizes and meal options offered in the cafeteria.

Nonnewaug holds 648 students and employs 132 faculty and staff members, most of whom partake in the school’s breakfast and lunch offerings. With the variety of meal options offered, students and faculty unknowingly produce more waste than necessary, not only adding to the school’s overall food waste, but also disregarding the potential benefits of utilizing the excess food in various ways.

“The majority of leftover food gets repurposed into another meal,” says Costa Lefkimiatis, a member of Nonnewaug’s food service operation. “An example of this is when the hot lunch line has nachos, the leftovers are turned into those hearty delicious burritos served on the grill station the next day.”

Even with efforts to recycle food, a considerable amount is still discarded and ends up in the trash due to students and staff not consuming it.

As I walked into school April 22, shivering from the bitter weather, a wave of stress crashed into my mind as I realized we still have two months left of this.

Left of what? The place where I have written essay after essay, worked through test after test, and have spent endless hours listening to my teachers ramble.

Don’t get me wrong, school isn’t the worst thing in the world, but coming back from spring break, it sure felt like it.

We’re so close to the end, yet still so far away.

Nonnewaug’s seniors in AP Art and the National A

Nonnewaug’s seniors in AP Art and the National Art Honor Society have been working very hard to finish their portfolios to close off the year.

Throughout the year, students in AP Art work hard for their final result: their portfolios. A student’s portfolio consists of 10 pieces of art made over the course of the whole school year. Each student picks a focus and topic that all of their projects will be based on. They have total freedom about their selection.

“They have to create an inquiry question, something that they are investigating. They have to visually communicate the answer to the question they are proposing,” Desjardins says. “So then from there they take all their process, sketches, ideas, experimenting materials, and putting all that together, they have 10 pieces that they do throughout the year and with that they can answer their own question.”
